Weather
In ancient times, people looked
to the night skies and watched
the stars and planets as they
moved throughout the year.
These same people watched the
skies during the day, too. Doing
so, they became familiar with
weather patterns that affected
their everyday lives.
Even in early days people were
able to use signs to predict the
weather.

Multiple Choice
In the early days before meteorologists were people able to predict the weather?
Yes
No
4
What does our
weather depend on?
Our weather depends on three
factors: air, sunshine, and water.
Sunshine carries heat to Earth.
When air gets warm, it rises. Then,
it starts moving as wind. Wind
carries water and clouds and
spreads them around to make
weather all over Earth.
Meteorologists are scientists who
study weather
5
Multiple Choice
What is a scientist that studies weather called?
climatologist
meteorologist
cloudologist
weatherologist
6
Multiple Choice
What three things does the weather depend?
air, sunshine, heat
air, sunshine, water
air, clouds, sunshine
air, heat rain
7
Clouds
Clouds are condensed water vapor that
comes in many forms. Identifying clouds
can help you forecast the weather. (Video)

liquid salt
condensed water vapor
thin air
nitrogen and oxygen

Weather Patterns
If you live in the same town or region for
a long time, you will experience yearly
patterns in the weather, called weather
patterns. For example, you may notice a
rainy season every year, or you may
know which months you can expect
warm weather or snow.
The weather often determines what you
do, where you go, and what type of
clothes you will wear, so it's helpful to
understand it. Weather patterns are part
of the climate, or the average weather
for an area over the course of a year or
so. An area's climate can be hot or cool,
wet or dry. Whatever it is, climate causes
changes on Earth and in how we live.
The landforms and other conditions of
the place where you live, in turn, affect
the climate in which you live. Climate and
place are related.

Many things affect the Climate of an area
Your latitude is a very important factor that affects climate! Latitude is the measure of how far a place is from the equator. The closer an area is to the equator, the hotter its climate. Areas near the equator get more direct sunlight than the rest of Earth. Along with latitude, mountains, water, wind and altitude affect the climate too. Altitude is the elevation of a place, or how high it is above sea level.
