CIRCULATORY

SYSTEM

If you were to lay out all of the arteries, capillaries and veins in one adult, end-to-end, they would stretch about 60,000 miles (100,000 kilometers). What's more, the capillaries, which are the smallest of the blood vessels, would make up about 80 percent of this length..

By comparison, the circumference of the Earth is about 25,000 miles (40,000 km). That means a person's blood vessels could wrap around the planet approximately 2.5 times!

Which of the following is the function of the auricles?

1

They are responsible for receiving used blood coming from the lungs and all parts of the body.

2

They pump oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body.

3

They purify blood to be distributed to all parts of the body

4

They carry oxygen-poor blood to the lungs.

8

Multiple Choice

Which of the following statements describes the function of the right ventricle?

1

When they contract, oxygen-poor blood is forced away from the heart

2

When they relax, oxygen-poor blood is forced away from the heart for distribution to the different body parts.

3

When they contract, oxygen-rich blood is forced away from the heart for distribution to the different body parts.

4

When they relax, oxygen-rich blood is forced away from the heart for distribution to the different body parts

9

Multiple Choice

Which of the following statements is NOT true about the function of the blood?

1

It transports water, oxygen, nutrients, salts, hormones, and other substances that sustain life.

2

It is the liquid medium that is constantly flowing throughout the body.

3

It removes waste products of metabolism from the different parts of the body.

4

It makes our skin reddish in color.

10

Multiple Choice

All of the following describe the red blood cells and its function EXCEPT:

1

Red blood cells are small spherical enucleated and biconcave cells.

2

Red blood cells are manufactured in the heart.

3

Red blood cells pick up oxygen from the lungs and transport it to all the body cells.

4

Red blood cells pick up carbon dioxide from the body cells and bring it back to the lungs.

11

Multiple Choice

Which of the following describes the function of the white blood cells?

1

White blood cells transport oxygen to the body cells.

2

White blood cells remove carbon dioxide from the body cells.

3

White blood cells help in the process of clot formation whenever a blood vessel is broken.

4

White blood cells fight invading bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites that cause infection.

12

Multiple Choice

Veins are thin-walled and floppy blood vessels. Which of the following is the function of veins?

1

They carry oxygen-poor blood from body parts back to the heart

2

They carry oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the body parts

3

They carry oxygen-rich blood from the body parts back to the heart

4

They carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body parts

13

media

The circulatory system is a transport system of the body. It is like a network of highways. It connects all the organs of the body. It is responsible for the transport of nutrients, water, and oxygen to the billions of cells in your body and carries away wastes such as carbon dioxide.

14

Parts and Functions of the Circulatory System

The circulatory system consists of three major parts:

15

media

The heart is the pumping organ of the circulatory system. It has four chambers, left and right auricles or atria in the upper chamber and the left and right ventricles in the lower chamber.

Heart

16

media

1.     Atria (singular: atrium) are responsible for receiving used blood coming from all parts of the body. When the atria contract, blood is pumped into the ventricles.

2.     Ventricles are the pumping chambers of the heart. When they contract, oxygen-rich blood is forced away from the heart for distribution to the different body parts

3.     Mitral and Tricuspid Valves are overlapping layers of tissue that allow blood to flow only in one direction

Major Parts of the Heart

17

media

The blood is the liquid part of the blood that transports water, oxygen, nutrients, salts, hormones, and other substances to the body cells in order to sustain life.

The Blood

18

media

1.     Red Blood Cells, also known as erythrocytes, are small, spherical, enucleated and biconcave cells. They pick up oxygen from the lungs and transport it to all the body cells and remove carbon dioxide-a waste gas.

Components of the Blood:

19

media
  1. White Blood Cells (WBC) or leucocytes are irregular in shape and are slightly larger and less in number than the red blood cells. They are the soldiers of the body because they attack and destroy germs that cause infection.

20

media
  1. Platelets or thrombocytes are the smallest component of the blood. They help stop bleeding.

21

media
  1. Plasma is the liquid part of the blood.

22

media

The blood vessels are the vast networks of small tubes that carry blood throughout your body.

The Blood Vessels

23

Veins are thin-walled floppy blood vessels. They carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart. The largest vein is the vena cava and the smallest are the venules.

Veins

Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to all parts of the body. They have thick elastic middle layer wall to withstand the high pressure of blood. The largest artery is the aorta and the smallest are the arterioles.

Arteries

Parts and Functions:

24

Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels. They serve as a connection between arteries and veins.
