Once you divide:

• your quotient (answer) becomes the whole number

• the remainder is the numerator

• the denominator stays the same.

Here are examples from Mrs. D'Urso

Multiple Choice

Change the improper fraction into a mixed number.

$$\frac{19}{2}$$

• $$9\ \frac{1}{2}$$

• $$2\ \frac{1}{9}$$

• $$\frac{2}{9}$$

Multiple Choice

Change the improper fraction to a mixed number.

$$\frac{27}{4}$$

• $$6\ \frac{4}{3}$$

• $$8\ \frac{1}{2}$$

• $$6\ \frac{3}{4}$$

Multiple Choice

Change the improper fraction to a mixed number.

$$\frac{10}{3}$$

• $$\frac{3}{10}$$

Now let's put it all together....

Divide mixed numbers

• You follow the same steps as dividing fractions, but you must first turn them into impropoper fractions

  • Then "Keep, Change, Flip"

Notice she simplified THEN changed it back to a mixed number!
