The Parts of a Spanish Verb

• There are TWO parts of a Spanish verb

• The first part is called the STEM. This is what comes BEFORE the ending.

• The second part is called the ENDING. This is what the verb ENDS with. It should either be AR, ER, or IR.

How and why do we conjugate?

• Conjugating is the act of simply saying WHO is doing a specific verb.

• In English, we do a whole lot of conjugating. For example:

• I run, you run, we run

• In Spanish, we are more clear about who is doing the verb. To determine who is doing a specific verb, the verb must CHANGE or be CONJUGATED.

To conjugate an AR verb, like hablar (to talk), you simply drop the AR ending and add these endings depending on who is doing the verb talking.
