2

Multiple Choice

What is the Law of the Conservation of Energy?

1

Energy is never created or destroyed, simply transformed

2

Energy is always created and destroyed

3

Energy is only created from natural sources

4

Energy can be contained indefinitely in a single object

3

Multiple Choice

When discussing your energy solution for Odysseus, you should include the limitations and errors.

1

True

2

False

4

My Example

According to the law of conservation of energy, energy is never created or destroyed, it is simply transformed. Based on this relationship, my solution to the missed transfer buses is to create a trebuchet that can launch students to their next school, anytime of the day. Trebuchet’s work by transforming gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy, thus flinging the students to their required destination.

STEM Physical Science

Solution and Claim

The Transfer Trebuchet is accessible to students during the school day, uses an alternative form of energy that requires no gasoline, is cost-effective, and transforms one energy form into another. The safety of the Transfer Trebuchet is reliant upon the students wearing the proper safety gear when using the trebuchet. Without the proper safety gear, student harm is more than likely.

2

Describe how your solution models the conservation of energy to solve your chosen problem

3

Discuss how you know your device works (data is useful!)

4

Describe how your device meets the criteria

9

My Example Continued

STEM Physical Science

Solution and Claim

Five separate trials were done to test the effectiveness of the Transfer Trebuchet. The first three trials failed to launch a 75 kg, approximately 150-pound, object to the next school. Due to this, the Transfer Trebuchet was rebuilt to a size of 15 meters and the next two trials successfully launch a 75 kg object to the next school.

My Example Continued

STEM Physical Science

Solution and Claim

The Transfer Trebuchet is an effective if unconventional way for students to make it to their next school without busing. Based on the data, students under 75 kg would successfully arrive at their transfer school via the Transfer Trebuchet. Not all students are under 75 kg, and this does place a limitation on which students could use the Transfer Trebuchet. Further trials need to be run with heavier weights to ensure a greater range of students could use this transportation.
