What is
hardware?

•Computer components can
be categorised into two
parts. Parts we can touch,
known as hardware, and
parts we cant touch,
known as software.

• The modern computer was designed by three

influential people.

• Gordon Welchman

• They built the computer model we use today

based on the human body! Each component
relates to a human body part.

Storage

There are two types of storage.

Volatile

Volatile memory is a type of memory that
maintains its data only while the device is
powered. If the power is interrupted for any
reason, the data is lost.

RAM – Random Access Memory, is volatile. It
is lost when the computer is turned off.

RAM holds information such as:

Program information –

copy and past, undo/redo

Non-Volotile

• Non-volatile memory (NVM) or non-volatile storage is a type

of computer memory that can retain stored information even
after power is removed.

• Examples include:

• Solid State Drives
• Hard Disk Drives
• Flash memory devices or USB Sticks
• CD
• DVD
