Addressing people during different times of the day

You can always say “bonjour” to almost everyone during the day.

Saying “bonjour” actually means “good day”

If you are talking to someone your age, you can say “Salut!” Which means “hi!”. You would normally not use this with adults unless they are close family members.

If you want to wish some one “Have a good day!” You would say “Bonne journée!”

In the evening, once the sun goes down, you say “bonsoir” or “good evening”.

Finally, when you are going to bed at night, you say “Good night” or "Bonne nuit".
