The Lunch Box Challenge

You work in the product design department at Zero Degrees
Celsius, an innovator in the ice cream storage industry. Your
creative director wants your team to design and test a new
lunchbox that can hold ice cream for a lunch time treat. You will
work on a prototype today and test it with a cube of ice. The
lunchbox design with the slowest transfer of heat will be used in
the final product design phase.

Lunchbox Constraints

• The box must be able to snap open and closed.

• No material may be added to the inside of the

lunchbox.

• Only material from the supply table may be used.

Before engineers begin their designs, they research
and read what they can find about the problem.
They will look at existing structures or products and
compare what they find to the problem they have to
solve.

Your team has three minutes to scan the research
material provided in your design notebook. As
you read, think about the physical properties of
the materials available to you.

Each member of the team will draw at least
two possible solutions for the design. During
this process, you may look at the materials,
but you may not take them to the table or
practice building in any way.

This is an independent activity, you are not
discussing your ideas with others now.

Now you will share your ideas with the
other team members. Each person should
talk about both of their designs and the
materials they plan to use.

After everyone has shared, the group will
decide which design will be the prototype
they build.
