The Distributive Property

The word “distribute” means

“to give out.”

There are two steps to the

distributive property.

4 x (20 + 8)

1) Multiply each part by 4. (distribute the 4)

= 80 + 32
= 112

1) Multiply each part by 4. (distribute the 4)

2) Add/ Subtract the two products.

Like terms have the same variable and index

Therefore we cannot add 5x and 30 so the expressions stays as is.

Inside the bracket has three terms so will multiply three times. Remember be mindful of the signs

-4 x 2y = -8y

-4 x 3m = -12m

-4 x -5y = 20y

-8y +20y - 12m = 12y -12m
