The History of Pizza
Where did it come from?
Over 3 billion pizzas are sold each year in the United States!! People have been eating pizza for centuries. Flatbreads with toppings had been enjoyed by the ancient Greeks and Romans. The birthplace of modern pizza was a region in Italy near Naples. People in Italy ate pizza out of necessity because they were poor and it was the cheapest form of food. Italians actually thought that eating pizza was a disgusting thing only done by the poor.

The dough is made with Italian wheat flour, crust is thin and baked in a wood-fired oven. Toppings are usually mozzarella, sauce and basil.

New York Thin Crust
A square shaped pizza that has a deep crust and marinara sauce on top. It is baked in a well oiled pan so that the edges caramelize. Since Little Caesars offers a Detroit style pizza, it has become more popular.

Usually has a cup and char pepperoni and a very thin crust. It has a sweeter sauce and lots of cheese.
Buffalo Style
A thin crust pizza that is similar to the New York style but it is fire oven cooked. What is different or unique about this pizza is that is often has fresh, local ingredients.

Pizza sauce is an uncooked tomato sauce. The best pizza sauce is simply pureed tomatoes and tomato paste with added spices (garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper. Pizza sauce is different than pasta sauce because pasta sauce is cooked and has more water content. Some pizzas use a pesto sauce made of olive oil, garlic, parmesan cheese, pine nuts, and basil.
