Conflict is the the struggle
between opposing forces-
drives the plot/ makes it go
forward
Conflict is a necessary
component in a story,
without it there is no story!

Minor Conflict: Moana struggles with what to do: make her
family happy or do what will make her happy.

An outside force causes problems for
the characters

Internal Conflict
The character (usually the
protagonist) struggles
emotionally or mentally.

on opposing sides. The main character has
conflict with another character.

is greatly affected by some force of nature.
This may be caused weather or animals.
The conflict ends once nature has returned
to normal and it is no longer a threat.

In this type of conflict, the main character
is greatly affected by the way they live
their life. They may not like the way they
are told to live, or the traditions that they
are expected to follow. The character may
also want a change in government.
The conflict ends once the character has
seen change in the way that they live.

(Character vs. Tradition,
Way of Life, or Government)
Pocahontas: She befriends an
outsider, she even saves him
from being killed.
Hunger Games: Katniss
Everdeen breaks tradition
when she volunteers in her
sisters place.

In this type of conflict, the main character

Often the characters must fight to survive
or protect others.
The conflict ends once the threat of
technology is no longer there.

struggle to make a decision, or

to understand her own
identity.
