WHAT IS A TURBO
•A turbocharger, or turbo is a turbine
driven forced induction device which is driven by
the engines exhaust gases .
• It increases an engine's efficiency and power by
forcing extra air into the engines combustion
chamber and proportionately more fuel can be
drawn into the combustion chamber .
•The power output can be dependant on the size of
the turbo charger (larger = more power)
5
The alternative to a turbocharger is a
supercharger, and this is mechanically
driven by the engine.
Belts and gears are common methods of powering a
supercharger, but do place a mechanical load on the
engine to drive it
ALTERNATIVES
6
The turbochargers compressor draws in the air
and compresses it before it enters the intake
manifold at an increased pressure.
The power needed to spin the centrifugal
compressor comes from the engine's exhaust
gases.

A TURBO CHARGER HAS PRIMARILY
THREE MAIN COMPONENTS
8
THE TURBINE
The turbine housings direct the gas flow
through
the turbine as it spins at up to 250,000 rpm.
9
THE COMPRESSOR / IMPELLER
The compressor increases the mass of intake
air entering the combustion chamber.
10
THE CENTRE HUB ROTATING ASSEMBLY
The centre hub rotating assembly houses the shaft
connecting the compressor impeller and turbine.
It also contains a bearing system to suspend
the shaft and is usually lubricated by a constant
supply of pressurized engine oil.

12
WHAT IS TURBO LAG
13
Turbocharger lag ("turbo lag") is the time required to
change power output in response to a throttle change.
You can notice it as a hesitation or slowed throttle
response when accelerating as compared to a naturally
aspirated engine where the response would be almost
instant .
This is due to the time needed for the exhaust system
and turbocharger to generate the required boost.
14
CAUSES OF TURBO LAG
Inertia, friction, and compressor load are
the primary contributors to turbocharger lag
15
SOLUTIONS TO TURBO LAG
Lowering the rotational inertia of the turbo’s
turbine will allow it to spool / rotate more quickly,
by using lighter parts that take less energy to turn.
Using reduced-friction foil bearings on the turbo/
impeller shaft will also help to reduce lag.
Reducing the surface area of the rotating blades,
and placing less restriction on the escaping exhaust
gases results in less impedance at low speeds.
Using two smaller turbo's as opposed to one large
one can help as they are smaller and have less
inertia and therefore can reach their optimum boost
delivery quickly
