Subject Verb Agreement Rules

  • A verb must agree with its subject. A singular subject takes a singular verb. A plural subject takes a plural verb. This rule applies to simple, compound, and complex sentences.

  • Add -s or -es to most verbs in the present tense if the subject is singular. Kelly plays video games.

  • A plural subject has a plural verb.

  • Don’t add -sThe bells ring loudly.

Plural Nouns

Collective nouns identify a group and take a singular verb when they refer to the group as a whole. The swarm of bees buzzes. Prepositional phrases (like “of bees”) do not change the verb.
