It has to be a noun (or pronoun)!
In order to receive the action of an action VERB, you have to be able to receive it.
In order to receive something, you have to exist in some way, so a direct object must be a noun!

How do we find them? How do we know something is receiving an action?
FIRST ➝ Identify your action verb.
THEN ➝ Ask yourself WHOM or WHAT after the action verb. "The subject [verb] WHAT?" or "The subject [verb] WHOM?"

Just ask yourself "The subject [verb] what?" or "The subject [verb] whom?" Answer that question, and you'll find the direct object!

Don't rush! A sentence can be long or short, complicated or straightforward. The important thing is taking your time and going through the steps to find the direct object so that you aren't distracted by extra words. Take your time, ask yourself our questions, and you'll be just fine! 😊
