The image shows food miles for the UK. Give a definition of "food miles"

13

Food Miles are the amount of miles it has taken for the food you are eaten to travel from where it was farmed to your plate. The higher the food miles, the greater the impact on the planet.

Food miles

What might be a problem of importing so much food in to the UK and having so many food miles?

15

The problem with food miles

  • Food miles create pollution because we are transporting foods using boats, planes, and lorries and these use fossil fuels (petrol) to move

  • These vehicles also use up more energy due to refrigeration (keeping the food cool)

  • Importing food means we often pay workers in other countries a low wage to have cheaper food in the UK

16

Open Ended

Why do you think we import so much food in the UK?

17

Why do we import so much food?

  • The UK climate is cold and wet so we cannot grow everything

  • People want more exciting or "foreign" food

  • People want to get fruits all year around (e.g. we can grow strawberries in the summer but people want them in winter)

  • Food grown in the UK is expensive (due to wages in the UK) compared to food grown in NEEs/LICs

18

=Grow food without chemicals but sell them for more money

  • More variety, more quality, less environmental damage, more expensive

Organic farming

=Running farms like businesses with lots of technology and chemicals

  • Less variety, less quality, more environmental damage, cheaper

Agribusiness

In your own words, summarise the difference between Agribusiness and Organic farming

25

Brexit and Farming

Brexit has meant that the UK has fewer people from Eastern Europe coming to work on our farms in the summer.

This means that some farms have been unable to harvest the food that they have grown; food has rotted and died in the fields.

UK workers have not wanted to take the jobs that European workers used to do.

26

Multiple Choice

What has been the impact of Brexit on farming in the UK?

1

The cost of food has gone up

2

The cost of food has stayed the same

3

The cost of food has gone down

27

Multiple Choice

What has been the impact of Brexit on farming in the UK?

1

We have more food

2

We have the same amount of food

3

We have less food

28

Multiple Choice

What has been the impact of Brexit on farming in the UK?

1

We end up with more food miles

2

We end up with the same amount of food miles

3

We end up with less food miles

29

Multiple Choice

What has been the impact of Brexit on farming in the UK?

1

Farms have done well and made money

2

Farms have done the same as before

3

Farms have made less money and had to close
