Proposal for setting up a local snack stall in the Sha Tin Winter Fair
The Sha Tin Winter Fair is famous for its variety of products and on behalf of Hong Kong
Secondary School, we are proposing to set up a stall selling local snacks Sweet Rice Ball and
Herbal Tea aiming to promote traditional delicacies to the public.
Introduction
With advanced culture development, international food has taken up a big portion of the
market and our traditional food is being forgotten by the young generation. Aiming to
restore the values and recognitions of our Chinese cultures, 2 kinds of local snacks would be
proposed for sale at the Winter Fair.
Sweet Rice Ball
Sweet Rice Ball is a meaningful festive food in the long Chinese history. It symbolizes
harmony and unity of the family. In order to attract young people to try our sweet rice ball,
it is proposed to replace the traditional sesame stuffing into fruit jelly stuffing so it looks
more colourful and pleasing on the inside. The rice ball would be made in our school’s Home
Economic Room, which is a hygienic and government approved venue for producing cooked
food. The proposed price would be $20 for a pack of 6 pieces of rice ball with different
flavours.
Herbal Tea
To compact with sweet rice ball, the herbal tea is proposed to help elevate the sweetness of
the rice ball. Herbal tea is another traditional Chinese food which is being overlooked by
most youngsters. Teenagers are seen with boba tea and frizzy drinks rather than our
heritage herbal tea. In order to revise teenagers’ perspectives, it is suggested that boba /
tapioca pearl cooked in dark sugar would be added to the herbal tea so the taste would be
more welcoming for the general young people.
2
Justification
According to the UNESCO, up to 50% of the young generation is losing interests in knowing
the cultures and roots of their own country; but more than 80% are willing to dwell into the
cultures of other countries. To set things right on the path, it is imperative that new
perception of our traditional food is to be introduced in order to reignite the passion of our
young to know more about traditional Chinese food cultures.
Marketing Plan
Social media is undoubtedly a powerful pool for promoting our proposed items. Setting up
an IG for our stall would be the first step. In order to keep our potential markets, videos of
making and packaging the sweet rice ball and herbal tea would be uploaded on the IG. More
than that, the IG would hashtag the Sha Tin Winter Fair as well. Aiming to maximise
promotion, those who like and share the IG posts would be given free samples of sweet rice
ball at the Fair. A bundle would also be proposed for getting a pack of sweet rice ball and a
bottle of herbal tea.
Conclusion
The value of traditional Chinese cultures is deteriorating among your young generation and
we all have the responsibilities to uphold our traditional food. We humbly seek your
approval in letting us run a stall selling the aforementioned products at the Sha Tin Winter
Fair.
