ORIGINS OF VALENTINE’S DAY
Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated each year on February 14th. Its origins date back
thousands of years ago to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, It was held mid February. The
festival celebrated Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture and the Roman founders Romulus
and Remus. It would pair off women with men for the duration of the festival. The holiday
may have gotten its name from a priest named Valentine who was martyred around 270 CE,
however there were several St. Valentines. The exact origin is unknown but there are several
legends. One legend states he defied the emperor who banned military men from marrying
because he thought soldiers that were married would care more about their families than
serving the army. St. Valentine secretly married the couples. When the emperor found out, he
was thrown in jail and sentenced to death. Pope Gelasius declared February 14th St.
Valentine’s Day but it wasn’t until much later that it became associated with love. Valentines
were popular as far back as the Middle Ages but written valentines didn’t appear until after
the 1400’s. Valentines commonly display heart and Cupid, the Roman god of love in the form
of a winged baby with a bow and arrows.

VALENTINE'S AROUND THE WORLD
February 14 is Valentine's Day. It is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is
a day to show love to the special people that you care about.
In America, valentine cards are often given along with certain gifts. The most popular
gifts given in America are roses and chocolates. It is one of the most popular
card-giving holidays in the United States. Children also make gifts and give cards to
their friends and teachers.
On Valentine's Day in England a character called Jack Valentine is said to knock on the
back door. He leaves sweets and presents for children.
6
VALENTINE'S AROUND THE WORLD
In Japan, there are two dates on which love is celebrated. February 14 is when girls
or women present gifts to their boyfriends, husbands, or any man close to them. Two
types of chocolate are given as gifts. One is called giri-choco. It is bought for friends,
bosses, and colleagues. Chocolates for boyfriends or husbands are special. This
chocolate is called hon mei. The chocolate is higher quality and sometimes is
handmade by the givers to show their affection. One month later, on White Day,
Japanese men present gifts to their girlfriends or wives. The color of the chocolate is
generally white, and that's why it's called White Day. Men also give flowers, candies,
and other gifts along with the chocolates.

VALENTINE'S AROUND THE WORLD
In Denmark and Norway, Valentine's Day is a time to eat a romantic dinner, send a
card to a secret love, or give a red rose to a loved one.
In Sweden, Valentine's Day is called "All Hearts' Day." It is celebrated as a time to
give flowers and perfume to special women in your life.
In Slovenia, they celebrate "A Day of Love" on March 14, instead of on February 14.

VALENTINE'S AROUND THE WORLD
The French celebrate Valentine's Day much the same as other countries by giving
fresh flowers and gifts.
Australia celebrates Valentine's Day with extravagant celebrations and festivities.
We are told that the Australians see Valentine's Day as an opportunity to strengthen
the love between family, friends, and neighbors with simple acts of love.
One interesting tradition that was once practiced in Italy on Valentine's Day was to
wake unmarried girls before sunrise. People believed that the first man an unmarried
girl saw on Valentine's Day would marry her within a year. Young girls were urged to
wake up early and stand by their window to watch for the first man to pass. Besides
card and gift giving,
