​Learning Objective

​Students will be able to implement the formula of Past Simple (be), regular, and irregular verbs by filling the given quiz through Quizizz  and discussing a paragraph in group discussion.

Past Simple - Use

​We use the past tense to talk about:

• something that happened once in the past:

We visited our grandparents last year.

• something that happened several times in the past:

When I was a child, I played outside all day long, I enjoyed spending time with my friends.​

• we often use expressions with ago with the past simple:

I bought my car a long time ago.

We can divide the verbs into:

​Regular verbs

(play, visit, dance, travel, create)

We add -ED to form the past

• Irregular verbs

  (drink, eat, sing, swim, write)

  They do not follow any spelling rule.​

Use

Affirmative form:

Past Simple: Affirmative​

• ​​All regular verbs end with -ed.

• ​For irregular verbs, see the list (2nd column).

• ​Notice all pronouns use the same rule with the verb (regular or irregular).

Negative form:

Past Simple - Negative form

​Use DID NOT (DIDN`T) before the verb in the negative sentence:

I didn`t play football yesterday.

She didn`t eat pizza last night.​

​

*Remember to have the verb in the SHORT INFINITIVE form when using the negative.​

Past Simple: Negative​

• ​​For negative sentences we use the auxiliary verb DID+NOT = DIDN'T

• ​The verb doesn't change when we use DIDN'T.

​

• ​She didn't go to the party.

• We didn't study for the test.
