​What if the short hand is in between?

​When the short hand is between hours, it the hour that it was last on. Here it is between the 5 and 6, because it is not on the 6 yet, it is still 5 o'clock with minutes added.

We learned about fractions. . . check out this clock when we divide it in HALF. What is at the TOP of the clock? What is at the BOTTOM of the clock?

Telling Time to the HALF Hour

The minute hand will be HALF way around the clock on the six. That's 30 minutes past the TOP of the clock.

Where is the MINUTE hand?

Notice that the hour hand is not on a number. OH NO! What's the hour? Is it 9 or 10??

Where is the HOUR hand?

It's HALF PAST the 9.

Because the minute hand has gone PAST the 9 and it's on it's way to the 10!

We can say this is HALF PAST 9. OR. . . .

Where is the HOUR hand?

The hour is 9.

It is 30 minutes PAST or AFTER the 9.

So we say 9:30
