  • The Louisiana Territory stretched south to the New Orleans and west to the Rocky Mountains.

  • In the 1800's pioneers moved west in search of land.

  • Spanish had controlled the region but at first let Americans to sail down to the lower Mississippi and trade in New Orleans.

  • Spanish and France had secretly agreed to transfer the land over to France.

  • Americans became no longer allowed to move there goods threw the New Orleans.

  • The France and Spain Agreement posed a serious threat to the U.S.

  • The French would put the trade along the Mississippi river at risk and would be crucial for the ones who live there.

  • Congress authorized Robert Livingston as much as 10 million for the territory.

  • It would also offer up cheap land for farmers in the future.

  • They would also have control of the Mississippi River.

  • The events at Saint Domingue ruined his Napoleon Bonaparte ( Frances leader) dreams of a Western Hemisphere.

  • Napoleon tried to regain control of Saint Domingue but failed and the country took the original name Haiti.

  • Without Saint Domingue Napoleon had little use for the territory.

  • France also needed money to finance there war against Britain.

  • So to solve Napoleons money problem he decided to sell the territory.
