The Louisiana Territory stretched south to the New Orleans and west to the Rocky Mountains.
In the 1800's pioneers moved west in search of land.
Spanish had controlled the region but at first let Americans to sail down to the lower Mississippi and trade in New Orleans.
Spanish and France had secretly agreed to transfer the land over to France.
Americans became no longer allowed to move there goods threw the New Orleans.
Where and what is Louisiana territory?

The France and Spain Agreement posed a serious threat to the U.S.
The French would put the trade along the Mississippi river at risk and would be crucial for the ones who live there.
Congress authorized Robert Livingston as much as 10 million for the territory.
It would also offer up cheap land for farmers in the future.
They would also have control of the Mississippi River.
Why did the u.s want to Buy the Louisiana Territory?

The events at Saint Domingue ruined his Napoleon Bonaparte ( Frances leader) dreams of a Western Hemisphere.
Napoleon tried to regain control of Saint Domingue but failed and the country took the original name Haiti.
Without Saint Domingue Napoleon had little use for the territory.
France also needed money to finance there war against Britain.
So to solve Napoleons money problem he decided to sell the territory.
why was France willing to sell The Louisiana Territory?

Thomas Jefferson who was the president of the U.S who bought the territory.
Robert Livingston who was a U.S representative who was told about the sale of the territory and told the Thomas Jefferson.
Napoleon Bonaparte who was Frances leader and sold the territory to the U.S.
Congress which authorized the 10 million to buy the territory.
The Spanish who secretly transferred the territory to France.
Who where the key figures involved?

They doubled the size of the U.S when they bought the territory.
It also strengthened the U.S materially and strategically.
The people believed Jefferson over stepped his Constitutional authority in buying the land.
Some did try to bock the purchase but failed and they found no record of it belonging to France to try to end it that way.
This also made a treaty between France and the U.S
