Streets of Water
Imagine a city where everyone gets around without cars or buses. In fact, there are no streets at all! Does this sound like a city of the future? Well, it isn't. It's a city that was founded in the fifth century. It's Venice, Italy.
Look at a map of Italy. Venice seems to dangle off its northeast coast like a charm on a bracelet. Venice was built on a group of marshy islands. The people who built it were fleeing attacks on the mainland. Since it was about three miles away, it was much easier to defend. Today, people rely on trains and boats to get there from the mainland.
92
Venice may be the most unusual city on the continent of Europe. Instead of streets, there are thousands of canals. These canals are like rivers. They connect the one hundred or so small islands that make up the city. The largest of these is called the Grand Canal. Three bridges span the Grand Canal. The most famous of these is the Rialto Bridge. It is a well-known landmark. Beautiful palaces and other structures line the canal's banks.
93
The Grand Canal is the most important of Venice's waterways. All kinds of boats travel up and down the canal. There are its famous gondolas, of course. There are also many boats carrying freight. Large boats called vaporettos travel the canals, too. These boats enable people to get around the city. They do the job buses do in a city with streets. Imagine jumping on a boat instead of a school bus every day to go to school.
94
All the supplies people need--from food to building materials--must be brought in by boat. When there is a fire, special fireboats pump water from the canals to put it out. The only additional method of transportation is walking or riding a bike. There are many narrow alleys and squares to explore beyond the canals.
If you visit Venice, you will really feel as if you've stepped into another world and another time.
