Review of each Biome's Climate

The 7 terrestrial biomes that we will study are:

1) Tundra

2) Desert

3) Taiga

4) Grasslands

5) Temperate Deciduous Forest

6) Tropical Rainforest

7) Savanna

14

Most deserts receive less than 300 mm a year.

The temperature in the desert can change drastically from day to0 night because the air is so dry that heat escapes rapidly at night.

The daytime temperature averages 38°C while in some deserts it can get down to -4°C at night. The temperature also varies greatly depending on the location of the desert.

Desert

Temperatures usually range between -40°C (-40 °F) and 18°C (64°F)

This biome sees 150 to 250 millimeters (6 to 10 inches) of rain per year.

The tundra is usually a wet place because the low temperatures cause evaporation of water to be slow. Much of the arctic has rain and fog in the summers, and water gathers in bogs and ponds.

Tundra

Tundra vs Desert

15

The average daily temperatures range between -30°C (-22°F) and 30°C (86°F) with a yearly average of 10°C (50°F). Hot summers and cold winters are typical in this biome.

The areas in which deciduous forests are located get about 750 to 1,500 mm of precipitation spread fairly evenly throughout the year.

The deciduous forest regions are exposed to warm and cold air masses, which cause this area to have equal four seasons.

Temperate Deciduous Forest

Precipitation in coniferous forests varies from 300 to 900 mm annually, with some temperate coniferous forests receiving up to 2,000 mm/ year (79 in/year). The amount of precipitation depends on the forest location. In the northern boreal forests, the winters are long, cold and dry, while the short summers are moderately warm and moist. In the lower latitudes, precipitation is more evenly distributed throughout the year.

The average temperature in winter ranges from -40°C (-40°F) to 20°C (68°F).

Taiga

Taiga vs Temperate Deciduous Forest

16

The climate is usually warm and temperatures range from 68° to 86°F (20 to 30°C). Savannas exist in areas where there is a 6 - 8 month wet summer season, and a 4 - 6 month dry winter season. The annual rainfall is from 10 - 30 inches (250 - 750 mm) per year.

Savanna

The summers are hot and the winters are cold. Sometimes the temperature is more than 100°F (37.8°C). Rain in the temperate grasslands usually occurs in the late spring and early summer. The yearly average is about 20 - 35 inches (550 - 950 mm), but much of this falls as snow in the winter.

Grasslands

media

The average temperature in tropical rainforests ranges from 70 to 85°F (21 to 30°C). The environment is pretty wet in tropical rainforests, maintaining a high humidity of 77% to 88% year-round. The yearly rainfall ranges from 80 to 400 inches (200 to 1000 cm), and it can rain hard.
