●There are two types of waves we cover in Physics:
○Electromagnetic Waves are created by a fusion of electric and magnetic fields.
The light you see, the colours around you are visible because of electromagnetic
waves.
○Mechanical Waves are created by the vibrations of matter and result in the
transfer of energy.
■Mechanical Waves require a medium to travel through, which can take the
form of solids, liquids, and gases.

Multiple Choice
Which type of wave requires a medium to travel through?
Electromagnetic
Mechanical
Matter
Magnetic
5
Reflection refers to when
a wave strikes a surface
and bounces off.
Properties of Sound Waves
Diffraction refers to when
waves are forced to bend
around a barrier.
Diffraction
Reflection
6
Properties of Sound Waves
Resonance is the ability of
sound waves to cause
objects at the same
frequency to vibrate.
Resonance
Pitch is the way frequency
is perceived in sound
waves. Higher frequency
sound waves have a higher
pitch and vice versa.
Pitch

Properties of
Sound Waves
The Doppler Effect refers to the an
increase (or decrease) in the pitch
(frequency) of an object as it gets
closer (or farther) from the listener.
An example of this is ambulance
sirens. The closer you are, the
higher the pitch!

Properties of
Light Waves
Refraction is the tendency of of
waves to change direction of their
waves when passing through a
medium with different density.
This is the property that
microscopes and telescopes use to
work!
