The Mexican-American War, which lasted from April 1846

to February 1848, was a confrontation between the United

States and Mexico. It resulted in the U.S. capturing more

than 500,000 square miles (1,300,000 square km) of

Mexican land spanning westward from the Río Grande to

the Pacific Ocean. This war was won by the Americans and

condemned by its contemporary detractors as

expansionist. It was caused by the US annexation of the

Republic of Texas in 1845 and a disagreement over

whether Texas ended at the Nueces River (a claim made

by Mexico) or the Rio Grande (the U.S. claim).

Spain and the United States engaged in armed warfare

from April 21 to August 13, 1898, which is known as the

Spanish-American War. After the USS Maine's internal

explosion in Cuba's Havana Harbor, hostilities broke out,

prompting US involvement in the Cuban War of

Independence. The war culminated in the United States

being the dominant nation in the Caribbean and in the

U.S. acquiring Spanish territory in the Pacific. It prompted

American participation in the Philippine Revolution,

which ultimately sparked the Philippine-American War.

- November 11, 1918), often abbreviated WWI, was one of the deadliest global
conflicts in history. It was fought by two coalitions, the allies (mainly France,

Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and the United States) and the Central Powers
(led by Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire). Battles were fought

throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Pacific and parts of Asia. An
estimated 9 million soldiers died in the fighting and another 23 million were
wounded, and 5 million civilians died as a result of hostilities, starvation and

disease.

PART 4: WORLD

WAR II (1939-1945)

16

media

World War II, often abbreviated as WW2, was a global conflict that lasted

from 1939 to 1945. Most of the world's nations, including all the great

powers, fought as part of two opposing military alliances : the Allies (led
by the Soviet Union, the United States, Great Britain and China) and the

Axis (led by Germany, Japan and Italy). Many actors are putting their

economic, industrial and scientific talent behind this total war, blurring

the line between civilian and military resources.
