Italian artists used new techniques such as perspective. Perspective shows a
three dimensional scene on a flat surface so that it looks real. Italian artists
showed people as individuals by giving them clear personalities.
A Renaissance person is someone who does everything well. Two men best fit this name. Michelangelo had many talents. He designed buildings, wrote poetry, made sculptures, and was a master painter. One of his most famous works is the painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. Another master in the arts was Leonardo da Vinci some say he was the greatest genius who ever lived. He was a sculptor, painter, architect, inventor, engineer, and map maker. He also studied anatomy. Like Michelangelo’s works, many of his works had religious themes, One of his famous religious themes that he is known for is The Last Supper.

Scholars in Italy and other parts of Europe read Greek and Roman texts on scientific subjects and then made their own scientific advances. Engineers and architects used new mathematical formulas to strengthen buildings. Renaissance scientists studied astronomy, some wrote almanacs based on the idea that the Earth was round. Other scholars made more accurate maps. Petrarch wrote about the importance of knowing history. The changes that occurred in the arts and sciences spread beyond Italy, which led to changes in education.

The Spread of New Ideas

Travelers and artists helped spread Renaissance ideas throughout Europe.
The development of printing, however, was a major step in spreading ideas. For the first time, thousands of people could read books and share ideas about them. Papermaking came from China to the Middle East and from there to Europe. European factories were making paper by the 1300s. Then in the mid-1400s, a German named Johann Gutenberg developed a printing press that used movable type. Using this method, an entire page could be printed at once. The first printed book was a Bible printed in Latin. Soon it was translated into common languages and printed. People wanted to learn to read, which made them want more education.

invented common phrases and common words. He is probably responsible for more than 2,000 English words. He wrote more than 30 comedies, tragedies, and histories.
