Fossil Review and Quiz
2
Directions:
Since I am not here today, you will be completing your quiz differently. Throughout this lesson there are slides, pictures, and/or readings to help you answer the question along the way. You can use the back arrow at any time to go back to an informational slide or reading. You can also use your notes and discovery education to help you work through this assignment.
***This assignment will be graded off of correctness. You only have one chance (but it is open note) and will be your fossil quiz grade. Do your best work!

Basics of Fossils:
Fossil- preserved remains or traces of living things and are formed when living things die and are buried by sediments.
Only found in sedimentary rocks
Typically about 10,000 years old
Two Main Types:
Body Fossils- a fossil of an organism's body or body part.
Trace Fossils- a fossil of an organism's footprints, burrows, or other features created by an organism's movement.
Paleontologist – scientists who study, collect and classify fossils

Multiple Choice
Which is the best definition for the term fossil?
an old rock
the skeletons of animals
the preserved remains or traces of an organism
leaf imprints

Mammoth Skull
Leaf Imprint
Dinosaur Tracks
Dinosaur Leg Bone
6
Multiple Choice
Typically, how long does it take for an organism to be turned into a fossil?
at least 10,000 years
66 million years
4.5 billion years
100 years
7
Multiple Choice
Fossil are only found in _____________ rocks.
Igneous
Metamorphic
Sedimentary
8
Multiple Choice
Which is the best explanation for why fossils are only found in the one type of rock (from slide 7)?
The other types require too much heat and pressure which would destroy all the fossils
The other types include weathering and erosion which would break up all the fossils
The other types don't include enough heat which melts the fossil into place
9
Multiple Choice
What type of scientist studies fossils?
Geologist
Petrologist
Paleontologist
Dermatologist
10
Preservation Potential
Organisms are rarely turned into fossils because the conditions need to be just right. This includes:
Rapid (Fast) Burial
Gentle Burial
Burrowing Animals
Little Exposure to Oxygen
Burial in Organic (living things) matter
Hard parts of the Organism
The more of these contitions the better chance the organism will turn into a fossil.
11
Multiple Choice
Do all living things turn into fossils?
yes
no

Match
Match the type of fossilization to the description.

Petrification
Carbonization
Permineralization
solid material from the organism dissolves and is replace with another mineral
Organic material is turned into stone. ex. petrified wood
Plants/animals decay except the carbon, leaving a carbon film on the rock
Groundwater carries dissolved minerals into the pores/cavities/holes of the organism

The Fossil Record
Information gathered by paleontologists is called the fossil record which provides evidence of:
history of life on Earth
groups of organisms changing over long periods of time
Earth’s past climate
past environments and changes in Earth’s surface
The fossil record provides evidence to support the theory of evolution
evolution – gradual change in living things over long periods of time
scientific theory – well-test concept that explains a wide range of observations
extinct – when an organism no longer exists and never will again
18
Multiple Choice
What is the fossil record?
Fossil information gathered and organized by palentologists
The explanation for the scientific law of evolution
the list of qualifications needed for something to be considered a fossil
19
Directions:
Read the text to the right about what information fossils give
20
Open Ended
In complete sentences (3-5) explain how fossils can tell us about the past. Include evidence from the reading and the slide (#19). Go back to them for help!
21
Multiple Choice
What does it mean when an organism has gone extinct?
when an organism no longer exists and never will again
when an organism no longer exists but could re-evolve again
when one organism changes into another one
22
Multiple Choice
Based on the last paragraph of the reading, what normally happens after a mass extinction?
Go back to the reading if you need to!
Some of the organisms will re-evolve
There is normally a period of quick growth of new species
Lots of fossils are created more quickly
