Past simple

Example:

He was at school yesterday.

He wasn't at school yesterday.

Was he at school yesterday?

Yes, he was./ No, he wasn't.

Note:

Các động từ có qui tắc (regular verbs) chuyển thành V-ed khi dùng ở thì QKĐ.

Các động từ bất qui tắc (irregular verbs) chuyển thành V2 khi dùng ở thì QKĐ.

Động từ to be sẽ chuyển thành was hoặc were. (I/He/She/It + was; We/ You/ They + were)

Ordinary verbs

(+) S + V2/V-ed + O.

(-) S + didn't + Vo + O.

(?) Did + S + Vo + O ?

To be

(+) S + was/ were + O.

(-) S + wasn't/ weren't​ + O.

(?) Was/ Were + S + O ?

Example:

They went to the park last weekend.

They didn't go to the park last weekend.

Did they go to the park last weekend?

Yes, they did./ No, they didn't.

Past simple

Cách thêm - ed vào sau động từ có qui tắc

1. Thông thường ta thêm "ed" vào sau động từ để thành lập dạng quá khứ.

look => looked                   work => worked watch => watched                     learn => learned

2. Những động từ tận cùng bằng "e" (câm), "ee" ta chỉ việc thêm "d" vào cuối động từ đó.

love => loved                          like => liked                    agree => agreed                    invite => invited         

3. Động từ 1 âm tiết, kết thúc bằng “Nguyên âm + Phụ âm” => gấp đôi phụ âm + "ed"

a. Đối với động từ có 1 âm tiết:

stop => stopped              shop => shopped           fit => fitted plan => planned            drop => dropped

Lưu ý: Với động từ kết thúc bằng "nguyên âm + phụ âm (h, w, y, x) thì ta chỉ thêm “ed” mà không gấp đôi phụ âm.

stay => stayed                       mix => mixed

b. Đối với động từ có 2 âm tiết kết thúc bằng “Nguyên âm + Phụ âm”, nhưng trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2 => gấp đôi phụ âm + "ed"

prefer => preferred                    permit => permitted         

travel => travelled                      refer => referred

Cách thêm - ed vào sau động từ có qui tắc

Lưu ý: Nhưng động từ 2 âm tiết có kết thúc “nguyên âm + phụ âm”, mà trọng âm ở vần đầu (không phải vần cuối như trường hợp ở trên), thì ta chỉ thêm "ed" vào cuối mà không gấp đôi phụ âm.

4. Động từ tận cùng bằng "y"

a. Động từ tận cùng bằng "y", trước "y" là nguyên âm ( u, e, o, a, i) => chỉ thêm "ed"

stay => stayed                             obey => obeyed     play => played

b. Động từ tận cùng bằng "y", trước "y" là phụ âm => bỏ "y" + đuôi "ied"

study => studied                           worry=>  worried                          supply => supplied

carry  => carried                           apply => applied                           try => tried

Cách phát âm - ed

Đuôi -ed được phát âm là /t/: Khi động từ kết thúc bằng âm /s/, /f/, /p/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /k/.

miss - missed

laugh - laughed

stop - stopped

wash - washed

watch - watched

look - looked

Đuôi -ed được phát âm là /id/: Khi động từ kết thúc bằng âm /t/ hoặc /d/.

visit - visited

need - needed

Đuôi -ed được phát âm là /d/: Với những trường hợp còn lại.

study - studied

• Thì quá khứ đơn dùng để diễn tả một loạt hành động hoặc sự kiện xảy ra trong quá khứ.

Example:

She put the shopping bag on the table, took off her coat, and started to cook dinner.
