-President Wilson was a internationalist, sincerely desired peace in his country
and around the world

-German U-boat sank the British passenger liner Lusitania

-Nearly 1,200 people perished, ship was carrying ammunition and other contraband

-Americans protested that unarmed and unresisting ship should not be sunk

-“Preparedness”= Wilson would be ready for war

-Many believed this to be a dangerous course that could provoke war
