Dear Mrs. Grump:
The primary purpose of this letter is to say how sorry I am about last night. I also wish to convey Popsie's apologies. Believe me, she deeply regrets last night's events. I think she has finally grasped the idea that those black and white creatures are to be avoided! She did not ruin your night's sleep out of malice. She simply happened to be in your backward at the wrong time. Besides, Popsie, too, experienced quite an ordeal. This morning she was in absolute misery. I hope she will feel better after a series of baths. It will be a long time before poor Popsie risks another meeting with a skunk.
93
This morning I phoned the city's animal control office. I complained about the skunk problem in our neighborhood. I must say, I was disappointed by the clerk's unhelpful attitude. She said that this unpleasant event would not have happened if I had kept Popsie indoors. Can you believe it?
Thank you, Ms. Grump, for reading my version of last night's events. You are so understanding. I'm sure you will forgive dear Popsie and me. I hope that in the future we will continue to be good neighbors with no gulf between us.
Sincerely,
Harold Huntsman-Trout
