Word Parts:
Many words are built from
smaller words, that smaller
word part is known as a
root.
The root can be the entire
word or part of a word that
is being borrowed, often
from a different language.
With a ROOT you can create many words by adding a
prefix , a suffix, or both.
Example:
Prefix Root/Base Suffix New Word
Un + Believe + Able = Unbelievable
If something is unbelievable, you are not able to
believe it.
3
The best way to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word
is by breaking it apart into its word parts. Sometimes the
spelling may change.
Root or Base Word:
A Base word is a complete
word that can be used by
itself.
A Root word is a part of a
word that has its own
meaning but is not a word
on its own.
Prefix:
A Prefix is a letter or a
group of letters that are
added to the beginning of
a word that help change
its meaning.
Suffix:
A Suffix is a letter or a
group of letters that are
added to the end of a
word that help change its
meaning.
