The passive voice
•We use the passive voice when we want to focus on the
action or the object, not the person who does it.
People perform the lion dance at Chinese New Year.
The lion dance is performed
= ‘be’ + past participle
at Chinese New Year.

Identify S,V,O
2.
Put the object as the beginning of the sentence. It becomes
the new subject.
People perform the lion dance at Chinese New Year.

The passive voice (without agent / doer)

3. Change the verb into ‘be + past participle’
• Pay attention to the ‘new subject’
• Singular?? Plural ??

4. Copy the rest of the sentence.

(by people) at Chinese New Year.
We don’t use by … when the doer of the action is
unknown or not important, e.g. people, they.
