Word Choice
Imagery - words and phrases that appeal to the five senses when describing things
Denotation - a word's dictionary definition, neutral
Connotation - the feeling or emotion associated to the word, positive or negative
Tone - the author's attitude (humorous, serious, encouraging)
Mood - your feelings, this is how the writing makes the reader feel (gloomy, joyful, suspenseful)

Poetry
BALLAD: tells a story, usually in rhyme with chorus like repetition
HAIKU: 3 line poem with syllables 5, 7, 5; usually about nature
LIMERICK: funny, 5 line poem with rhyme scheme AABBA
FREE VERSE: does not follow any rules for rhyming, lines, topic
RHYME: words that have the same ending sound (i.e. cat/hat)
RHYME SCHEME: pattern of end rhyme in a poem represented by letters (i.e. AABB means first two lines rhyme, second two rhyme)
REPETITION: repeated words or phrases for emphasis
