Bringing Henry Home

Mom parked the car, and we walked into the animal rescue shelter. The woman at the front desk greeted us and took us down a long hallway with lots of cages on both sides. I was surprised to see so many dogs and cats in one place! There was a lot of barking and even some hissing as we passed the cages.

I had already decided on the kind of dog I wanted to bring home. I wanted a big dog that would run around and fetch a ball. Mom told me to wait and see because I might change my mind once I got there. She was absolutely right!

As I walked past one cage in particular, I heard a scratching noise. When I looked down, I saw the cutest little dog I had ever seen. The sign on his cage said, “Henry, beagle mix.” Henry was scratching at the door of his cage as if to say, “Let me out, and take me home!”

Mom signed the adoption papers, and Henry was officially mine. We took him home, and the first thing I did was throw a ball for him. He brought it right back to me!

A New Place to Play

The playground at my school is old and worn out. My cousin is fifteen years older than I am, and he remembers playing there when he was my age. The paint is chipping, some of the swings are broken, and the slide makes a creaking noise.

The county board of education decided to organize an event to raise money for a new playground. The board asked all the schools in the county to participate and come up with ideas for the fund-raiser. Some kids at my school wanted to have a bake sale. Other kids wanted to collect bottles and turn them in for money. I wanted to have a jump-a-thon. People could sponsor us, or make a donation, for each jumping jack we do. After a vote, my idea for the jump-a-thon won.

My grandparents, my aunt, my neighbors, and my parents decided to contribute one dollar for each jumping jack. I couldn’t wait to get started. I wanted to do at least a hundred jumping jacks to raise money for the new playground.

After the event was over, our principal counted the money that was raised. We were able to build a new playground! We even had some money left over to buy new jump ropes, balls, and plastic hoops. The jump-a-thon was a success!

Brother Trouble

This morning started off badly. I tripped over my younger brother’s skateboard. Lewis had left it in the middle of the room we share. He does that all the time, and it makes me so mad! My parents never make him clean up his side of the room.

I wish we lived in a bigger apartment or in a house so I could have my own room. As I sat down at the breakfast table, I could hardly look at Lewis. When I had tripped, I had fallen and hurt my elbow. I’d screamed really loudly, but my brother didn’t hear me. He’d been in the hallway outside our apartment, getting his boots, which he’d left there to dry.

I clenched my teeth and said in a low voice, “You left your skateboard out again.”

Lewis replied, “So?” His response made me even more angry!

I yelled, “So, I tripped over it and hurt my elbow!”

Just then my parents walked into the kitchen. They gave Lewis a stern look. Then they asked both of us what was going on. Lewis just shrugged his shoulders. I told my parents what happened, and for once, they listened. They asked my brother to apologize and told him that he is not allowed to bring his skateboard into our room.
