Early Years
Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897, in Atchison, Kansas.
Her father was a lawyer for a railroad company and she got to travel across the country and see different things.
She went to the World's Fair in 1904 and saw a roller coaster and was inspired to build one herself. She was 7.
Her and her sister built it in the back yard off the shed and Amelia went first and crashed, but said it felt like flying.

Her love of planes begins
When she was 10 she saw her first airplane at the World's Fair in Des Moines and was not impressed with it.
When she was 21, she saw her first stunt airplane show in Canada. She felt the excitement when the plane swooped by her and her friend.
When she was 23, she went to an airshow that offered rides to people. She jumped at the chance to go in the plane. When the plane got a few hundred feet off the ground, she knew she wanted to learn how to fly planes.

First Woman to cross the Atlantic
In April 1928, she was asked to fly across the Atlantic Ocean with pilot William Stultz.
She had to be the co-pilot because she did not know how to fly the plane they would be in.
She claimed that she felt like baggage, because she did not fly the plane by herself. She hoped to be able to make the trip again, but by herself.
10
Solo Flights
In 1932 she decided to fly across the Atlantic by herself. She left from Newfoundland, an island off the coast of Canada and intended to arrive in Paris.
Bad weather and mechanical problems prevented her from making it to Paris. She instead landed in Derry, Ireland.
Amelia earned many rewards for this accomplishment. She was becoming famous across the United States for doing this.

Setting Records
Amelia was the first person to fly from Honolulu to Los Angeles.
She set seven speed and distance records for women flying.
Amelia also set the record for the longest, non stop flight, for that time.
In 1935, she started to plan for a trip around the world, following the equator.
13
The flight around the World
Amelia flew with 4 crew members to Hawaii in March 1937. When they landed, the plane needed repairs and was sent back to the states.
She tried again with Fred Noonan in June 1937. They flew for over 22,000 miles and had only 7,000 miles left of the journey and they lost contact with the U.S. Coast Guard.

The disappearance
Amelia and Noonan landed in New Guinea and had the next stop as Howland Island.
They had trouble communicating with the coast guard, because of radio signals being poor. The coast guard believes that they were just off course from getting to Howland Island. The island was only 500 meters wide.
The coast guard lost contact with them and began a search party to try and find them and the plane. They searched for weeks, but never found them.

Disappearance Theories
Some experts believe that they ran out of fuel before they reached Howland Island because their tank was not full. Because of this belief, they think they crashed into the ocean.
Another theory is that they landed on nearby Garner Island. In the 1940's a construction crew on the island found a skull, that is believed to be Amelia's. There was also bits of clothing, plexiglass and pieces of aluminum from the plane and a jar of freckle cream that is believed to have belonged to Amelia.
18
Last Theory
There are some people who think that she could possibly have been taken prisoner by the Japanese when she landed on Marshall Island. There are rumors that she and Noonan were held captive on the island of Saipan. Many people who were alive at that time claim that an American pilot was there for many years and their story was passed down through generations. They state that her and Noonan were held because they were thought to be spies.
