What is a compound sentence?
Two independent clauses joined with a comma and a FANBOYS

FIRST...FANBOYS
FANBOYS is the acronym that we use for coordinating conjunctions.
Coordinating conjunctions are used to join together independent clauses to make compound sentences. They can also be used to make compound subjects or compound verbs. On the next slide, you'll have an opportunity to recount what those conjunctions are.

Making compound sentences is easy. I'll show you some examples on the next few slides, then you'll have a chance to practice!

Combine these sentences using a comma and FANBOYS.
He likes to climb trees.
There is a tall tree in the back yard.
He likes to climb trees, so he climbed the tall tree in the back yard.

Combine these sentences using a comma and FANBOYS.
She likes strawberries.
Bananas are her favorite.
She likes strawberries, but bananas are her favorite.
