pieces together. General information on
cutting layouts are printed on the front side
of the guide sheet.

Tissue Pattern Pieces

Each pattern pieces mark with a number

or letter and with a specific name such as:
collar or sleeve. The number of pattern
pieces to be cut will also be printed on the
pattern piece. The various lines and
symbols on the pattern pieces serve as
guide during cutting and sewing.

Pattern symbols and meaning.

Grain line – a heavy solid line with an

arrow at each end. It appears on all
pattern pieces that are not cut on a fold.
The grain line arrow must be placed
exactly parallel to the selvage.

Cutting line – a heavy line that outlines the

pattern pieces. Sometimes a symbol of a
scissors is printed on the line to show the
proper direction for cutting.

Notches – diamond – shaped symbols that

extend beyond the cutting line. They are
used for matching seams and joining
garment pieces.

Stitching line or seam line – a broken line

usually 5/8 inch inside the cutting line.

Center fold and center back – a solid line

indicating where the center of the garment
is located.
