What is a direct object pronoun?

A direct object is the person or thing in a sentence that receives the action.

​For example, in the sentence "I put the plates on the table", the plates is the direct object because that is what is being put down.

What is a direct object pronoun?

A pronoun is a word that refers to a noun.

A direct object pronoun is a word that refers to a direct object.

​For example, in the sentence "I put them on the table", them is the direct object pronoun because it refers to the plates!

In Italian, there are four direct object pronouns.​ The correct one to use depends on the grammatical gender and the plurality of the word we are trying to replace / refer to.

We can use the words for "the" as a guide since those also depend on the gender and plurality of a word.
