Positive sentences:

  • I have some good news for you.

  • They want to spend their holiday somewhere in Europe.

  • She has to tell you something.


Question (offers / requests) + you expect the answer to be "yes":

  • Would you like some more coffee? (= offer)

  • Can I have some sugar, please? (= request)

Negative interpretation:

  • any (niets / geen)

  • anything (niets)

  • anybody / anyone (niemand)

  • anywhere (nergens)

Negative sentences:

  • I don't have any brothers.

  • They didn't travel anywhere during their break.

  • She doesn't understand anything of what the teacher's saying.

Question (open questions) + asking for information:

  • Are there any questions about this topic?

  • Is there anything you want to tell us?

Extra usage:

We can also use "any" in a positive sentence to say "one or another" (not important which one).

Example:

You may wear any dress you want from my wardrobe.

--> Je mag eender welke jurk dragen (het maakt niet uit welke)
