Wind Power

Wind power comes from moving air.

Large wind turbines use the wind to spin a generator that creates electricity.

Inside the wind turbine are two long shafts that spin around.

One is a low speed shaft that the turbine spins and is connected to a gearbox.

There is also a high speed shaft that is connected to one side of the gearbox. The gearbox makes it spin faster.

The high speed shaft turns the generator.

  • The blades turn the low-speed shaft.

  • The low speed shaft spins and is connected to the gearbox.

  • The gearbox speeds up the the shaft.

  • The high speed shaft now spins faster which turns the generator.

Wind turbines can be placed offshore. This means that they are located in the water near the land. There are usually strong wind currents located just off the coast.

Offshore Wind Turbine

Wind turbines can be placed on land. They can be placed in locations that have strong wind currents.
