​Figures of Speech

- is a way to express ideas using other thoughts and concepts.​ For example, instead of saying "Her voice sounds magnificent" you may say "Her voice sounds like starlight." The voice is described as magnificent by comparing the subject to starlight. Hence, the meaning conveyed through figures of speech is not literal.

​Simile

- compares two objects using the words like or as. ​

For example:

His voice is like the footfalls of warriors.

Crossing the streets of Manila is like playing patintero. ​

​Metaphor

- compares two unlike objects without using like or as. ​

​

For example:

The newly hired bus driver is a toad.

It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. ​
