Northern Renaissance

Religious subject matter was as common as it was in Italy, but it was the Northern Renaissance artists who found more ways to depict religious scenes. They also found new and more complex ways to infuse artwork with symbolism.

Much like the Renaissance in Italy, the Northern Renaissance was a time of monumental creative activity.

The Northern Renaissance includes modern-day Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and France.

4

Symbolism -

The practice of using an object to represent something else, usually something invisible, like an ideal or emotion.

The following symbols can be found in the Portinari Altarpiece.

  • The scattered violets stand for humility.

  • The orange lilies stand for the Passion of the Christ.

  • The columbine signifies the Holy Spirit.

  • The three red carnations remind viewers about the three nails of Christ's crucifixion.

  • The wheat behind the two vases refers to Christ's birth, which took place in Bethlehem, which means "the house of bread" in Hebrew.

In Northern Renaissance art, even the tiniest detail could have a symbolic function, almost always religious in nature

This Dutch market would have been a familiar sight to 16th-century viewers, much as a supermarket is familiar to us. But what goes on behind the meat stall is the real subject of the painting. Looking through spaces left between hanging cuts of meat, one can see the Holy Family's flight into Egypt, a Biblical event in which Joseph and Mary flee to Egypt to save their unborn child from being killed by King Herod. In the right corner is a depiction of the prodigal son returning to his family. These scenes were inspired by the gospels of Matthew and Luke in the New Testament.
