Open Ended

Some bacteria can cause a diseases in humans.

Can you name two diseases caused by bacteria

6

Open Ended

What other kind of organisms can caused diseases?

7

Microorganisms

An living organisms that so small and only can be seen clearly with microscope.

Many microorganisms are made of only one cell called "single-celled"

8

Single-celled (unicellular organisms) are made up of only one cell that carries out all of the functions needed by the organism.

For example, a paramecium is a slipper-shaped, unicellular organism found in pond water. It takes in food from the water and digests it in organelles known as food vacuoles.

9

Bacteria

A single bacterium consists of just one cell, and is called a single-celled.

Bacteria does not pose any harm and can live harmlessly within the human body. They also help in body function like digestion. Few bacteria may be dangerous also.

10

Fungi

Fungi not always microorganisms. Many fungi are large and easy to see, including mushroom and toadstool. The fungi that do not produce mushroom and toadstool are made of single-celled (not threads) for example yeast.

What is an organism?

What characteristic do all organism have?

13

Open Ended

What is a microorganism?

14

Open Ended

Do all microorganisms have these characteristics, too?

15

Open Ended

Do viruses have these characteristic?

16

Viruses are even smaller than bacteria.

Suggest why they are not usually said to be microorganism.

17

We can see yeast on the surface of fruit.

Why is yeast classed as a microorganism?

18

Growing bacteria on agar jelly

Growing bacteria in a nutrient agar plate is a great way to see bacteria because each one becomes a colony of thousands of bacteria. Colony

is the collection of cells.

this can be done safely in the laboratory . Scientist let microorganisms to grow on petri dish containing special kind of jelly, called agar jelly. The agar serves as food for the bacteria. The dish and the jelly have to be sterile.

Microscopic algae and protozoa

Algae are the organisms, often microorganisms, other than typical land plants, that can carry on photosynthesis.

Protozoa or protozoans, are single-celled, eukaryotic microorganisms. Some protozoa are oval or spherical, others elongated.
