Not all language is literal, sometimes language is figurative.
You may read, they have 'butterflies in their stomach'
It's important to know that they don't have actual butterflies in their stomach.
The person is actually feeling nervous
Butterflies in your stomach is a metaphor for feeling nervous

Figures of speech that can be words or phrases that mean something different than the words might indicate.

Author's use Simile's, Hyperbole's and Metaphor's to help paint a picture in the reader's head.
Author's use Idioms, Onomatopoeia, and Alliteration to make their writing more interesting and engaging for the reader.
