Legal, Ethical and Societal Issues in Media and Information

Objectives

1. understand the basics of intellectual property, copyright, and fair use guidelines.

Legal issues in media and information involve laws and regulations governing the creation, distribution, and use of media and information.

Ethical issues in media and information are the moral principles governing the creation, distribution, and use of media and information.

Societal issues in media and information involve the social impact and implications of media and information in our lives.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

- refers to creations of the mind that are protected by law. It can include inventions, literary and artistic works, symbols, names, images, and designs. The main purpose of IP law is to encourage and reward creativity and innovation by granting exclusive rights to creators and inventors for a limited period of time.

COPYRIGHT

-a form of legal protection for authors, artists, and other creators of original works, such as books, films, music and other artwork. Copyright provides exclusive rights to the owner to reproduce, distribute, or perform the work.

FAIR USE

-a legal doctrine that allows limited use of copyrighted material without requiring permission from the rights holders. It is used for educational, research, and other non-commercial purposes.
