7
Types of Reproduction
There are two types of reproduction:
• Sexual
• Asexual
Teach Time:
8
Asexual Reproduction
Asexual reproduction occurs when only one parent
organism or part of that organism produces a new
organism.
Advantages: Doesn’t require a parent organism, occurs
in a shorter amount of time, and works well in a stable
environment.
Disadvantages: No genetic variation. A major
environmental change can wipe out a species.
The new organism is genetically identical to its parent.
9
Two kinds of Asexual Reproduction:
1)Regeneration
The ability of an animal to regrow lost parts.
10
Two kinds of Asexual Reproduction:
2) Vegetative Reproduction
The ability of offspring to grow from part of the
parent plant.
These parts include stems, roots and leaves.

vegetative reproduction
budding

13
The hydra has a growth that appears to get larger. The growth
looks like itself in the second photo.
Advantages: No need to have two organisms, quick.
Disadvantage: Leads to too many organisms that are exactly the same.

Type of
Reproduction
Advantages
Disadvantages
Sexual
More genetic Variation
Better survival in a changing
environment
Takes a longer amount of
time
Less reliable
Requires more energy
Asexual
Takes a shorter amount of time
Requires less energy
Double the rate of population
growth (under ideal conditions)
No genetic variation
less possible survival in
changing environments
