  1. The first word of a sentence. (She loves cats.)

2. The first word in the greeting and closing of

letters. (Dear, Yours truly)

  1. The first and last word and important words in titles of literary works. (Books, songs, short stories, poems, articles, movie titles, magazines) *NOTE: Conjunctions, articles, and prepositions with fewer than five letters are not capitalized if they appear in the middle of the title.

  2. The first word in a direct quotation. (Dad said, "Who was at the door?"

  3. The first word in a topic outline.
