As automobiles became more popular, road problems grew

Road improvements made them safer and enabled speedy shipment of

products to markets

First improvement: paving rural roads

Texas highway commission paved 7500 miles of rural roads in 1945

1956 National System of Interstate highways created

Federal government paid 90% of cost for 40,000 miles of roads linking major

cities in the U.S.

Texas got 3200 miles of those roads, more than any other state

Improvements in technology and growth in industries spurred

growth in cities

1948, Houston one of the fastest growing cities in the country

(space and petroleum industries)

It was a prosperous time and cities were bursting at the seams

Birth rate jumped (1946-1964, baby boom) suburbs started to pop

up

Civil Rights Act of 1964- This new law made it illegal for restaurants,

hotels, hospitals, and other public places to discriminate against people on
the basis of race.

The Voting Rights Act of 1965
Brown v Board of Education
Gilmer-Aiken Bills- improved teacher training, raised teacher salaries,

provided textbooks for all students, and required students to attend school
for nine months each year. The bills also set up the Texas Education Agency
to set and review standards for Texas teachers and public schools.
