Su origin
Popular versions now usually include La Llorona drowning her children in a river after being abandoned by their father. In some versions, she murders them out of pity when they run out of food and no longer have a home. Other versions, she murders them for revenge. The story has been popularized over time.

The story of La Llorona has been traced back to the Aztec Goddess, Coatlicue. She is said to be weeping for her children on the eve of the Spanish conquest (when her children were murdered by the Spaniards). Her story is sometimes connected to that of "La Malinche".
