William Lloyd Garrison
-Born in 1805, in Massachusetts
-He was a very prominent U.S. abolitionist, and
newspaper writer and editor
-Garrison worked on a newspaper that focused on social
reform
-Later became co-editor of an abolitionist publication
-He would travel across the US and England to speak
out against slavery
-He would also support women's rights movements and
the Temperance movement as well.
-The state of Georgia hated Garrison and the Liberator
so much that they offered a $5000 reward for his
capture.
9
The Liberator!
-One of the most extreme antislavery newspapers in the country
-Had the advocacy for the immediate emancipation for the millions
of African Americans held in slavery across the South

Garrison’s letter
“[The Liberator] has operated like a trumpet-call. They have risen in their hopes and feelings to the perfect stature of men: in this city, every one of them is as tall as a giant. About ninety have subscribed for the paper in Philadelphia, and upwards of thirty in New-York, which number, I am assured, will swell to at
least one hundred in a few weeks.”
11
Garrisons first issue in the Liberator
I am aware, that many object to the severity of my language; but is there not cause
for severity? I will be as harsh as truth, and as un-compromising as justice. On this
subject, I do not wish to think, or speak, or write, with moderation. No! no! Tell a man
whose house is on fire, to give a moderate alarm; tell him to moderately rescue his
wife from the hands of the ravisher; tell the mother to gradually extricate her babe
from the fire into which it has fallen; – but urge me not to use moderation in a cause
like the present. I am in earnest- I will not equivocate- I will not excuse- I
will not retreat a single inch- AND I WILL BE HEARD.

Design the Headline:
You are working for the Liberator. Create a headline and article based on the
primary source material we looked at. Those sources are in your google
classroom to reference. Design your article and headline on a blank sheet of
paper. Use details from the sources to support your article.
