Word Study!
Many English words are formed by adding prefixes, suffixes, or
both to a word that already exists. Words to which prefixes or
suffixes are added are called "base words."
For example, the word predict means "to estimate what will
happen in the future." By adding the prefix un- and the suffix -able,
you create the word unpredictable, meaning "unable to estimate
what will happen in the future."
4
Multiple Choice
What is the prefix that has been added to this word: unobservable

Oral Tradition
Storytellers and poets of long ago did not write down the tales
they told. Indeed, some of them may not have known how to
read or write at all! Instead, they learned the stories and
poems of their culture from others and recited them from
memory. The term oral tradition refers to the literature that
was passed down by word of mouth. Eventually, these
spoken stories and poems were recorded in writing.
8
Oral Tradition - Epic!
One form of literature that has come from the oral tradition is
the epic, a long narrative poem. Many of these epics are
central to a culture or nation's shared identity. The narrative in
an epic centers around an epic hero, a larger-than-life
character who possesses traits his society values most
highly.
9
10
In Medias Res
Many epics begin in medias res, which means in the
middle of the action. Major events occurred before the
action of the poem begins, and the reader is thrust into
the middle of the story. The Odyssey begins (like the
Trojan War and Odysseus' adventures there), and the
reader is thrust into the middle of the story.
11
In Medias Res - Flashbacks!
The hero's adventures are often recounted in a flashback, a
scene that interrupts a narrative to relate earlier events.
Readers are told, in the first adventure, that Odysseus is
recalling all the struggles he encountered on his journey back
from Troy. He is telling the story to Alcinous, King of the
Phaecians, and although he starts in the middle of the story
of his return home, he is interrupted in that story and goes
back to tell earlier parts of the story.
